Abstract In North America, one factor shaping petromodernity is the idea that oil offers a solution to very problems it causes. This article examines paradox, focusing on 1950s. It analyzes set of pamphlets from Petroleum Industry School Program were distributed by American Institute (API), trade organization promotes US industry. first describes evolution support for and opposition industry as well ideas freedom sought mobilize gain public support. Next content pamphlets, which employed series binary pairs, such success/failure risk/reward.
